How it Works

GeoEDGE implemented a customized GeoNode platform for the Survey Department of Sri Lanka to improve access to and sharing of over 150,000 spatial datasets. The project involved configuring and deploying the GeoNode system on in-house infrastructure, tailoring its frontend interface to match the department’s requirements, and conducting rigorous performance testing. To ensure long-term sustainability, our team provided in-depth training and workshops for both technical staff and end-users, enabling the department to manage and expand the platform independently moving forward.

“Empowering the Survey Department with a scalable, user-friendly spatial data platform was key to advancing open geospatial access in Sri Lanka.”

Process & Results

We began by setting up a new production-ready GeoNode system to host the Survey Department’s vast collection of spatial data. Our developers customized the frontend to align with institutional branding and optimized the backend for high-volume dataset handling. The system underwent stress testing to ensure stability and performance under heavy usage.

To safeguard operational continuity, we implemented automated backup and restore scripts within the department’s hosting environment. A two-day training session equipped IT staff with skills in GeoNode maintenance and enhancement, while a half-day workshop introduced data users to the platform’s tools and benefits. The result is a future-ready spatial data sharing environment that promotes data accessibility, collaboration, and internal capability.
